The Sands of My Heart

by TRAVIS TAPLEY

If I built you a castle out of sand
Would you know each grain is a piece of my heart?
It will never crumble, or fall apart
Created by love, forever it will stand.
The winds of time will never blow it down
Protected by my soul, you are safe inside
Even the tides of life shall be denied
True love braves the wind, and storms all around.

Will you come live in this castle I’ve built?
Surround yourself in the walls of my soul
Each speck of my heart wants to make you whole
Step inside my life, without fear or guilt.
This castle is nothing without you dear
Its walls cannot stand and will disappear.

Starless Sky

by TRAVIS TAPLEY

I watched them
decline one by one
each a piece of my heart

falling at my feet
burning out

growing dim
the light of her love

I was left by myself
with darkness

even the moon
turned his radiance
from me

now I stand alone
under a starless sky

Timeless

by TRAVIS TAPLEY

give me an eternity
it is still not enough
I would need three forever’s
to give you all the love
you deserve

seconds
minutes
hours
days
weeks
years

unending
enduring
abiding
timeless
infinite

so is my love for you
it will never die

 You Are Sweet Salvation

by TRAVIS TAPLEY

take me down into the water
immerse me in the depths of you
bury the old and raise anew
baptize me into your sweet love

immerse me in the depths of you
cleansed of burdens holding me down
you are the gospel in my heart
preach to me the word of your soul

bury the old and raise anew
a new man that has seen the light
the heavens shine upon your face
you are the goddess I worship

baptize me into your sweet love
wash me in the river of you
teach me the ways of paradise
salvation only you can give

Morning Dew

by TRAVIS TAPLEY

steps taken into green blades
that hold the tears of the
moons descent into the morn
the sun shining their silver praise

I wipe them upon my feet
feel the sorrow in each one
as the warmth of the day
melts them into my soul

barefoot shadows tickle my toes
as I greet the morning birds
in this song of another breath
cheerful in the morning dew

feel the drip from each leaf
as I walk under the trees
that shade my youthful dreams
they give me their wisdom

 I rest under fingers of
velvet oak touches
exchange knowledge with
this wooden friend

I know like the moisture that
fades in the sun of a new day
so will the trees that listened
and on their whispering winds
carried my dreams into adulthood

Autumn’s Death

by TRAVIS TAPLEY

Leaves turning brown, falling to their death
Severed from limbs like cast away children
Whispering winds comfort their descent
Peaceful words of becoming one with the earth.

Severed from limbs like cast away children
Listen to the sounds as you gracefully fall
Peaceful words of becoming one with the earth
Slowly fade back into mother nature.

Listen to the sounds as you gracefully fall
Float into the shallow ribbons of green
Slowly fade back into mother nature
Nourish the roots with life in your death

Float into the shallow ribbons of green
Gracefully you drift to your resting place
Nourish the roots with life in your death
Feed the hungry buds that come forth in spring.

Gracefully you drift to your resting place
Melting, melting, you slowly turn to crumbs
Feed the hungry buds that come forth in spring
Leaves turning brown falling to their death.

*The pantoum is a form of poetry similar to a villanelle in that there are repeating lines throughout the poem. It is composed of a series of quatrains; the second and fourth lines of each stanza are repeated as the first and third lines of the next. This pattern continues for any number of stanzas, except for the final stanza, which differs in the repeating pattern. The first and third lines of the last stanza are the second and fourth of the penultimate; the first line of the poem is the last line of the final stanza, and the third line of the first stanza is the second of the final. Ideally, the meaning of lines shifts when they are repeated although the words remain exactly the same: this can be done by shifting punctuation, punning, or simply recontextualizing.
